Decluttering your home is one of the best things you can do to help make your home safer and to make things easier for your loved ones.

  1.  Plan and Empty – Schedule a time to organize – 15 minutes to an hour – whatever suits the goal you want to achieve. A single shelf or cabinet. Starting small will set you up for success. Start with clearing a space where you’ll have good lighting and plenty of room to spread out items and look through them. Next gather trash bags, boxes, a marker and paper. Label bags/ boxes with actions such as keep, donate, sell, recycle, shred and trash.
  2. Sort – Sorting is about making quick decisions. If you don’t love an item or don’t use it, get rid of it. Period. Ask yourself how long it’s been since you’ve seen or used the item in question. As a general rule – If it’s been more a year, consider passing the object along. Be realistic about items you’re keeping to use “one day”.
  3.  Shop – The biggest mistake people make when organizing is going shopping first. Before shopping, measure your space, look at your decor, and define your personal organizing style. It’s vital that you choose an organizing system that fits you, your home, and how you live.
  4.  Reassemble – Take some time to live with your newly cleaned space. Think about how you want it to look and function, and reassemble when you’re clear about your needs. Organizing is a process. It’s about clearing away the clutter so you can discover what really works for you.
